FCM Call to Action on Infrastructure as an Economic Stimulus FCM President Jean Perrault is encouraging municipal leaders to take time over the holidays to reinforce the importance of municipal infrastructure in an economic stimulus package by brining this issue to your local Member of Parliament and media. Municipalities can create 100,000 jobs starting this spring, but we need new money for repairs, rehabilitation, and shovel-ready projects. News Release - Thursday, December 18 Saskatchewan urban municipalities not represented at pre-budget consultations in Saskatoon As part of the Federal Government’s pre-budget consultations, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is hosting roundtable discussions with invited stakeholders in Saskatoon today. While rural municipal interests are being represented by the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM), the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) was not invited, leaving urban municipal interests unrepresented. SUMA appreciated the opportunity to have met with Federal Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, John Baird, and other municipal groups from Western Canadian provinces on Monday in Vancouver. Despite this, SUMA President Allan Earle is concerned that today’s meeting with the Finance Minister will not include the voice of 75 per cent of Saskatchewan residents – those that live in urban municipalities. SUMA Board Meeting Highlights
The SUMA Board of Directors met on December 11-13, 2008 in Regina. Among the topics up for discussion were Councillor Dawn Luhning’s agreement to stay on as Convention Co-Chair, Board review of the 2009 Budget, Presentation by the Municipal Capacity Development Program, and comments from Minister Bill Hutchinson who once again attended the SUMA Board meeting.
